Shania Twain (2023)

Vanaf de jaren ’50 van de vorige eeuw bestaat er in de Amerikaanse country & western muziek een spanningsveld tussen twee groepen musici, zij die dit genre willen verrijking door bruggen te slaan naar andere muzieksoorten (‘zogenaamde ‘cross-overs’), zoals Europese pop, rhythm & blues, rock en hiphop en zij die dicht bij de traditionele country & western willen blijven. Dit spanningsveld kwam aan de orde in mijn verkenning van country & western muziek. Vanaf eind 20^ste eeuw is de kloof niet alleen verder verbreed, maar lijkt de populariteit van cross-overs die van de traditionele ‘country & western’ te overtreffen. Een persoon is hiervoor vooral verantwoordelijk, namelijk Shania Twain die met haar muziek de weg bereidde voor Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Maren Morris en anderen. De gevestigde orde rond in de ‘Grand Ole Opry’ te Nashville was daar niet blij mee.  Tekenend is dat Sarah Jennifer Parker, die door haar rol in ‘Sex and the City’ wereldberoemd was geworden, gevraagd werd om een optreden van Shania op passende wijze aan te kondigen en ze maakte een statement (beloond een mager applaus van het publiek). Hier zie je Shania’s daaropvolgende vertolking van ‘Man, I feel like a woman’, een liedje uit haar derde album.

Terug naar het begin. Eilleen Regina Edwards is geboren op 28 augustus 1965 nabij Ontario.  Ze heeft haar vader nooit gekend. Zij is opgevoed door moeder en haar stiefvader, wiens naam ze ook heeft aangenomen. Hij was een Oibwa, een Canadese First Nation en uit zijn taal zou ook de naam Shania komen, die ze rond haar twintigste als artiestennaam ging gebruiken. Vanaf haar achtste levensjaar heeft ze naast haar school meegewerkt om de kost voor het gezin mee te verdienen.  Ze poetste in cafés en werkte met haar vader in de bosbouw.  Later werd ze zangeres van verschillende bandjes waar ze veel waardering mee oogstte.

Hier een filmpje uit die tijd van overigens slechte kwaliteit waarop ze het liedje ‘What Made You Say That’ zingt., een liedje dat zij overigens niet zelf heeft geschreven.

Aan haar Assepoester tijd kwam nog geen einde. Op haar haar 22^de nam ze de zorg op zich voor haar jongere broer en zus, toen haar ouders bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven waren gekomen. 

Ze kreeg het voor elkaar om de aandacht van een platenmaatschappij, Mercury uit Nashville, te trekken en op haar 28^de verscheen haar eerste album: ‘Shania Twain’. Het liedje dat ik net heb laten horen stond daar ook op.  De platenmaatschappij maakte er ook een voor die tijd nogal expliciete muziek video bij, die je eventueel hier kunt zien

Het album was geen commercieel succes, maar het trok wel de aandacht van producer Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange, met wie ze kort daarna trouwde en die een belangrijke steun was bij de drie albums die ze in de periode 1995 – 2002 uitbracht.

The woman in me

Van het eerste daarvan (haar tweede album) ‘The woman in me’ (1995) werden 20 miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Haar echtgenoot had een feilloos gevoel voor marketing en verving de country ‘flavour’ in dit album voor de verkoop buiten de VS door ‘pop’-elementen, bijvoorbeeld door violen verruilen door synthesizers. Marktsegmentatie zou bij volgende albums verder worden doorgevoerd. 

De twee meest succesvolle nummers waren ‘(If you are not in for love) I ‘am outta here’ en ‘Any man of mine’, een duidelijk voorbeeld van een ‘cross-over’.  Een van de zeldzame pure country & western songs is ‘Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?’, dat vergezeld gaat van een grappige muziekvideo.  Deze kun je hier beluisteren en bekijken.

I’m Outta Here’ is de eerste van de twee opnames uit dit album die ik hier wil laten zien.

Ook dit liedje heeft een humoristische video, waarvan overigens ook verschillende versies zijn gemaakt.  De wat absurdistische ‘Mutt Lange pop remix’ kun je hier bekijken. In deze video spelen drums een belangrijke rol. Dat was ook het geval in haar concertreis.  Dit nummer was doorgaans slotnummer (voor de toegiften) en ze werd op het toneel daarbij steeds vergezeld van een plaatselijke drumband.

Het tweede liedje uit ‘The woman in me dat je hier kunt beluisteren en bekijken is ’Any man of mine

Met dit liedje kwam Twain in de VS voor de eerste keer op nummer 1 op de country hitlijst. Je ziet een liveoptreden gefilmd in Dallas. De veel bekeken muziekvideo (kijk hier) heeft de acceptatie van Shania als country zangeres ongetwijfeld versterkt.

Come on over

Van Twain’s derde album ‘Come on over’ (1997) werden 40 miljoen exemplaren verkocht en het was daarmee haar bestverkochte album. Het was op dat moment tevens het bestverkochte album van een vrouwelijke soloartiest ooit. Volgens velen is het ook in artistiek opzicht het beste. Ze diepte in dit album persoonlijke thema’s zoals seksualiteit, feminisme, racisme en armoede verder uit. Maar ze blijft een ‘entertainer’ en mixt haar boodschap met een dosis humor en gelach. Ook nu werden nummers voor markten buiten de VS en Canada voorzien van een sterker popaccent. 

Het liedje ‘Man I feel like a woman’ heb je al gehoord.  Ik laat nu nog horen ‘You’re still the one’. Het liedje gaat over haar relatie met Robert Jan ‘Mutt’ Lange. Critici hadden geopperd dat ze alleen met hem getrouwd was om haar carrière te versnellen, ook omdat hij 17 jaar ouder was dan zij. Zij schreven samen dit liedje als een statement dat hun relatie (tot dan toe) stand hield.

Van andere nummers op dit album heb ik een paar goede opnamen uitgekozen: Come over here, Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love) en From This Moment On.

Critici waren in het algemeen positief en loofden de wijze waarop Shania country & western muziek aanpaste aan de onvermijdelijke invloed van rock en pop. Anderen waren van mening dat het album niets of weinig meer met country & western te maken heeft. Weer anderen vonden dat Twain haar oppervlakkige flirt met country & western helemaal niet nodig heeft om als zangeres te excelleren. Critici die een decennium later op dit album terugkijken menen dat zij ‘country pop’ definitief als een eigen genre op de kaart heeft gezet. Taylor Weatherby van Billboard spreekt van a ‘brilliant fusion of country, pop and rock’.

Up

Shania’s vierde album ‘Up’ (2002), waarvan 20 miljoen exemplaren zijn verkocht, speelt nog verder in op de verschillen tussen de afzetmarkten. Hier volgt om te beginnen de titelsong ‘Up’, live in Chicago. 

Er werden drie verschillende CD’s uitgebracht, een groene CD die overwegend een country & western karakter heeft en ook enkele akoestische nummers bevat, een rode CD, waarop pop en rock domineren en een blauwe CD met een dance en Zuid-Amerikaans karakter. Via de bovenstaande links kun je de drie genres vergelijken aan de hand van de drie officiële muziekvideo’s van de titelsong ‘Up’. Ik vind de verschillen erg klein.

Ook nu waren de commentaren overwegend positief. Voor alle smaken wat, lijkt toch steeds meer Twain’ (of Lange’s) handelsmerk te worden, maar er werd ook opgemerkt dat ‘Up’ “too generic and emotionless for that level of diversity” is.

Je kunt nu kijken naar twee andere nummers. Het eerste is ‘Thank You Baby! (For Makin’ Someday Come So Soon)’. De muziekvideo is opgenomen in een galerie in Vancouver en alleen in Europa uitgebracht. Je kunt deze video hier bekijken en beluisteren.

Vervolgens kijk en luister je naar naar ‘She’s Not Just a Pretty Face’, live uit Chicago. Het commentaar van Billboard loog er niet om: Het liedje is een “ultra-lightweight country-girl power anthem” maar ook een “exquisite country pop”.

Haar eerstvolgende nieuwe studioalbum album volgde pas 15 jaar na ‘Up’. Het was een moeilijke periode waarin de ziekte van Lyme haar stem aanzienlijk verzwakte en ze een open keeloperatie doorstond om haar stembanden te versterken. Bovendien scheidde ze in 2008, nadat Lange deze een relatie had gekregen met haar beste vriendin. Met haar man, Frédéric Thiébaud, is ze in 2011 hertrouwd. Hij is ceo van het Nesléconcern^[1]. Pas in 2012 trad ze weer voor het eerst op, maar een nieuw album liet nog op zich wachten.

Now

Van dit album ‘Now (2017) en ook het volgender ‘Queen of me’ (2023) heeft Shania Twain niet alleen alle liedjes geschreven, maar ze nam ook de verantwoordelijkheid over de productie, iets dat haar voormalige echtgenoot bij de vorige albums deed.

Ik laat van ‘Now’ ‘Life’s About to Get Good’ horen en zien.

Het liedje, dat gaat over er bovenop komen na een moeilijke tijd, werd goed ontvangen.  Andrew Unterberger van Billboard noemde het ‘Come on over’-waardig (haar derde en best beoordeelde album, 20 jaar eerder)

Queen of me

Netflix heeft in 2022 een documentaire van het leven van Shania Twain gemaakt. Deze heette ‘Not just a girl’, naar een liedje uit 2022 dat ook op ‘Queen of me’ staat.  Ik laat de ‘officieuze’ muziekvideo zien van dit liedje, die bestaat uit een collage van foto’s en filmpjes die haar hele leven als zangeres omvat. Wie ‘Not just a girl ‘live’ wil horen luist hier naar de (matige) opname in Las Vegas.   

Als laatste laat ik een opname van ‘Forever and for Always’ (uit het album ‘Up’) horen, opgenomen tijdens de ‘Queen of me’-tour in september 2023.  Het liedje gaat over vriendschappen die een leven lang voortbestaan. Het is me voor het eerst opgevallen dat haar stem lager was is dan voorheen. Ook begin je (eindelijk) de leeftijd (58!) te zien.

Muziekcritici hebben in het algemeen veel waardering voor haar liedjes, haar vocale prestaties en haar podiumoptredens. Die waardering geldt in iets mindere mate voor haar twee nieuwste albums. ‘Queen of me’ bevat overwegend onvervalste electro-pop. Een criticus merkt op dat Twain “tries so hard to capture current trends that it already sounds behind the times”.

Mijn volgende post gaat over drie van de zangeressen voor wie Shania de weg heeft geplaveid, Taylor Swift, Carrie Onderwood en Maren Morris.

^[1] Zijn naam kwam een paar jaar leden in een andere blogpost van me oor nadat dit bedrijf was geaccrediteerd als ‘benefit corporation’, waarmee tot uitdrukking wordt gebracht dat sociale overwegingen, consumentenbelangen en natuur even zwaar wegen als aandeelhouderswaarde.
